Ancestral Colonel Award Recipient Selected
Alan Gubanich '64 was selected as the recipient of the Ancestral Colonel Award, which recognizes accomplished athletic alumni and friends who have achieved personal and professional excellence. The award will be given out during Homecoming 2014 at halftime of the football game held at noon on Saturday, September 27 at the Ralston Athletic Complex at the Schmidt Stadium.
Alan is an emeritus faculty member at the University of Nevada, Reno where he was a member of the Biology Department for 35 years (1970-2005). He taught classes in Ornithology, General Biology, Field Studies and several other disciplines. He is Vice-President of the local Lahontan Audubon Society (LAS) and Chair of their Education Committee, a Board Member of the Great Basin Institute (GBI), and a former Board Member of the Great Basin Bird Observatory (GBBO.) He banded birds for over 11 years in the Truckee Meadows as part of a nation-wide population study. He is co-editor with Karen Kish of A Birding Guide to Reno and Beyond, 2nd edition. He has led outdoor weekend trips and one-day excursions (natural history, cultural history, birding, botanizing) in both Nevada and California through the Workforce Development and Continuing Education (WDCE) department of Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) and has traveled to and/or organized tours to various locations in North, Central and South America, Europe, Japan, Africa and Hawaii. He and his wife now regularly spend quality time babysitting their 2-year old grandtwins, Rita and Jackson, at least once a week.
