Giving Societies

Every gift to Wilkes makes a difference in the lives of students. We would like to especially acknowledge those donors who qualify for one of our giving societies.
The John Wilkes Society
The John Wilkes Society is a society of benefactors who contribute $1,000 or more to the University each year. As our most prestigious society, it is named after the University’s namesake- John Wilkes, an English radical, journalist and politician. Members of the John Wilkes Society receive many special benefits throughout the year, including an invitation to the annual John Wilkes Society Recognition Event held in the fall and invitations to selected events, including the Rosenn Lecture Series and the Kirby Lecture Series, as well as seminars held throughout the year.
The Marts Society
Alumni, friends and benefactors who play a sustaining role in the future of the University and its students through bequests and other charitable estate planning techniques are member of the Marts Society. Many of these types of gifts allow donors to contribute cash or appreciated assets to benefit Wilkes while earning income during their lifetime. Members of this prestigious society are invited to an annual recognition event.
The Marts Society was named in honor of Dr. Arnaud C. and Anne McCartney Marts. Dr. Marts became President of Bucknell University in 1935 and was instrumental in maintaining Bucknell University Junior College in Wilkes-Barre during the years of the Depression. Because he believed in the service offered to the young people of the Wyoming Valley, Dr. Marts provided the support and leadership the fledgling institution needed to become self-sustaining. Dr. Marts established a trust in 1964, which provided a lifetime income for Mrs. Marts after his death. Upon her death in 1994, more than $2 million was gifted to the University, which helped to make possible the Arnaud C. Marts Sports and Conference Center.
The W Club
The W Club recognizes donors who have given for two or more consecutive years. This group of loyal supporters illustrates their continual belief in the students of Wilkes through their continued giving. Because they are a symbol of belief in Wilkes, the W Club is named after the symbol of the University, the “flying W.” W Club members are recognized at a special reception with the President of Wilkes during Homecoming each year.
